I totally sympathize.  I stressed about Ben being at the vet all day, even
though I knew he'd be fine.

My shepherd broke his dewclaw pretty bad.  It never did grow back properly. 
I think it hurt quite a bit, too, when he broke it.  I've sometimes broken a
nail past the quick too, and it hurts like mad.  So I'm sure the vet was
right to anesthetize Monte for a bit while they worked on him.
Good luck, and I'm sure everything will be fine.  Gee, hope Monte doesn't
have to wear the cone.
