[nagdu] Help from sighted people was RE: Elevator doors

People are people and, from me, everybody gets the same amount of help unless more is asked for.  I figure that being helpful is just polite, good, behavior.  If it's pretty obvious that help might be needed or appreciated and it seems like maybe the person is like me and not great at asking for help (lol), I'll offer to help in some specific way.  (It's hard to think of an example, but it's SO annoying when you could use just a little help and then the helper kinda takes over and does whatever for me versus helping.  People mean well, but...yeah...I also make my requests for help very specific.)

And Deanna, I'm totally asking to pet the cane of the next person I see who looks like they have a sense of humor.  HAHAHA

>I agree with you two as well. I find that many sighted people are very helpful. Sometimes, a little too helpful.
>I have noticed that people are typically more helpful to people working a guide dog. They come up and talk to you and are very willing to give help. When I have my cane, people don't usually ask to pet it (actually, that would be a bit weird) LOL.
>Now, the other day, I got off at a new bus stop and was not sure exactly where to catch my next bus. I was fumbling around trying to find the bus stop... And wouldn't you believe it, there weren't any people around to ask for help! /smiles/. I did find it eventually, and luckily it was running late, so I didn't miss it.
>Oh, and I just love it when people ask me for directions or where something is located, which I usually can help them with.

>Very eloquently put! I don't like it when people go back and forth saying that blind people are this or that sighted people are that. We are all humans and just because we are either blind or cited doesn't mean we are less willing or more willing to do any of anything. I think that the actions of people should not be based solely on their site or blindness. It should be based more on the person as an individual.
