Mid-block crosswalks really depend on drivers to know the rules....most of
them don't. They don't see a stop sign or red light, so they go and will
only stop if you are directly in their path. There is a crosswalk like this
in Cameron Village, Raleigh (NC). I regularly use it to get across to the
other bus stop or to the library, but have to wait until there are no cars
around because good luck trying to get them to stop. It is rare to have a
car actually stop and wait for me when I have my cane out in front of me,
obviously waiting to go across. I think this is a national problem, not just
in your town/city. Drivers these days are just not caring about pedestrians.
