[nagdu] DOJ on service dogs and allergies

Since we cannot be denied service because of our guide dogs, it is best to
not advise them of this fact in advance. Advanced notification causes more
discrimination than it resolves. If you want to wait forever for a taxicab,
let the dispatcher know you have a guide dog. If you want to make sure you
don't get discriminated against, deal with the issue when it arises rather
than create the issue by advanced notification. Also, if you learn that your
name, number, or address is flagged in a taxicab company's system as having
a guide dog and this information seems to be the reason you are not getting
equal benefits, it is a vilation of the ADA.

Fraternally yours,
Marion

I have had drivers tell me that I should have said that I had a dog in case
the driver had allergies. I said I was not required to and didn't intend to
start. I don't think he liked me. One night a driver told me the dog
couldn't get so close to him in his van. He kept babbling about it, and I
told him if he would get on with the trip home from the airports, we would
be out of his cab and he wouldn't have to worry about it anymore. I got home
not so much later.
