I think others have given very good information on security and seating. I just wanted to add, that no matter how much information you have or plans you make, everytime will be a little different. You'd think TSA all go to the same training and follow the same rules so security should be the same, but it's not. Also the configuration of seating is different from plane to plane depending on the particular model. It's just like cars, a Cadilac is more comfortable than a tiny economy car.

I was in Denver the past few days for a conference. I didn't take Monty. On the way there i walked through the metal detector with my cane and no one said a word or even checked it. On the way back tsa was asking me how other TSA agents had me go through in the past. I went through the same way, then they checked my cane, which was fine with me. Still, it always a surprise.

I think it's important to know the rules so you can speak up if they are asking you to do something inappropriate. It's also important to be flexible within the rules. Also, also being able to speak up for yourself without losing your composure is an absolute necessity.

But, I'm with Ed. Amtrak is my preferred travel mode if it's at all workable with my travel plans.
