Is the Gentle Leader because of the sniffing?  And did the slowness become a 
problem when you started using the Gentle Leader?  Maybe ditching the GL and 
addressing sniffing some other way would work.

That's just my immediate observation.  Of course I don't know the details or 
the whole situation. I get how frustrated you are and hope you can find a 
workable solution.
