[nagdu] walking guide dogs?

Barb,

You ask a good question.  Two things...you went directly to having someone 
else walk the dog for Jewl.  Typically things like this are suggested 
because there is an underlying belief that the blind person can't manage 
independently.  We get a lot of that from sighted folks.  The list tends to 
be a place where people feel like others will understand what blind people 
can do and will support each others independence.  I have no idea what your 
beliefs are about the capabilities of blind people or if this is any way 
what you were getting at, but I felt like it did come across that way.

Then, you made a generalization that all guide dogs are overweight and not 
worked enough.  Again I don't know if you meant only the few guides that 
you've seen in person or what.  It came across pretty harsh.  That statement 
along with the idea that we can't walk our own dogs felt like we are all fat 
and lazy and don't set down the Doritos long enough to get off the couch to 
provide exercise for our dogs.

email is hard sometimes, because the same word can mean different things to 
different people.  Or omitting a single word by accident can change the 
entire meaning.  Or what we thought was perfectly clear to ourselves turned 
out to not to be clear at all.  You are new to the list and we don't know 
you all that well.  We don't know what's typical for you and know how to 
read between the lines.

You asked, so I've explained the best I can from my perspective.  There's no 
hard feelings meant.  I would like to get to know you better and hope that 
you will continue to post.

Ok, when I suggested this to Jewel, I got beat up, mow hear Gary asked the 
question in a different form and he is OK,  what did I do wrong.  The only 
reason I suggested Jewel maybe have someone else do leash walks of if She 
couldn't do them herself.

I don't want trouble I just want  to understand.

My dog gets at least one sniffy walk the day. If she didn't, she really 
would be even more of a problem with her sniffing, I think. Maybe I should 
try doing like you do and do a bunch of smaller sniff sessions.
