My suggestion is to check on like ebay or freecycle, or yard sells. many baby gates can either expand or compress, to fit different door widths. Find one that you can adjust. if you do buy new, again the key word is adjustable. When we did have a cat, and used the baby gates or pet gates, we bought one that had vertical bars so that the cat could go in and out, but a pup could not get through. Another alternative is, to use a liter box that has a lid with door on it. the door is big enough for a cat to get through but not a dogs head.
