Hi Melissa,
Congratulations on the baby, and the dog!
I'm not sure if you live in an urban, suburban, or rural area and what
your options are concerning number of veterinarian offices, and
transportation to various offices. Even if you have two or three in
your area, always, always, always comparison shop. Google the
different vet offices in your area, and explore their websites. See
what services they offer. Call them and ask them about the prices of
common visits. How much is an office call? How much is an ear
cytology. What is the price range for antibiotics to treat an ear
infection? Ask about the costs of vaccines? If you are the bartering
type, ask if the vet is willing to give discounts for a service
animal. Also, be sure to ask about whether they have emergency
services or if they send their clients to a different hospital for
that service.
Stop by the office if you can and have the vet give your dog a check
up. If you don't like anything about how you or your dog is treated,
go somewhere else. Do not think you have to put up with being
separated from your dog for any common procedure, or put up with
anyone disrespecting or treating you differently because you are
visually impaired. Do not put up with a veterinarian who is
condescending in any way. And make sure your vet likes dogs! There are
certainly vets who don't. Also, be sure that your vet answers all of
your questions in a polite, explicit, and straightforward manner.
Also, call around to see what the average prices are for things. Out
here, an office call typically ranges from $40 to $60, so if anyone is
charging more than that, or even toward the higher end of the scale, I
know that there are places that charge less.
Before I got my apartment here in Grand Rapids, MI, the most important
factors to me were cost and location. I have to take public
transportation anywhere I go, but I still want a place close by.
I asked the vet's office for a discount, and they give me a 50%
discount on everything--vaccines, meds, procedures, office calls, and
so on. Some places will only give 10%, but something is better than
nothing.
After I moved in, I visited the vet and she gave my golden guy a check
up. He had an ear infection, too. As a first time dog owner and
handler, I had a lot of questions, and my vet spent an hour with me,
speaking to me politely, and being straightforward. She had questions
for me, too. She asked me about what I fed my dog, how much water he
drank each day, and if I was giving him any supplements.
After that appointment, I knew that she was the vet for my golden guy.
I could tell that she cared about him, and she cared about me as a
client.
Every time I walk in that place, everyone is welcoming. They allow me
to be independent, and if I ask for help with anything, they are more
than happy to assist.
My advice is to seek something similar to my situation, if not better.
If you don't have to settle for less-than, you definitely should not.
You are trusting someone with your dog's health and life. If you feel
like the vet is pricy or you are being gypped, go somewhere else. If
you feel like the office is in it for the money, go somewhere else. If
there are other options, take advantage of them.
Also, I'd say look into homeopathic treatment and supplements for
dogs. These treatments and supplements are not just for people who are
thrifty or have money problems. Nature has a lot to offer in the way
of human and dog health alike. Your dog can become immune or allergic
to flea preventatives and antibiotics, but there are natural solutions
that are affordable, easily accessible, and easy on your dog's system.
If you are interested in things like that, email me and I'd be happy
to send you some websites and book titles to check out.
Good luck with finding the perfect vet for you and your dog. The
perfect vet definitely exists!
