[nagdu] mobility independence question

Hi John and all,
I remember the days of when the schools didn't really insist on good O&m
skills before getting a guide dog. Some of these people were in my classes.
It wasn't pretty.

The schools want you to have good skills for a reason. You have to already
know how to travel independently with a cane first. You have to know how to
judge traffic and how to get around on your own first. When you are
training to use a guide dog, you must use the skills you have already
learned. Then you will be ready to learn how to apply these skills using a
dog.

I have seen people trying to learn everything at once and it didn't work out
very well. The dog just got confused and was unable to get the proper info
from you that it needs to properly guide you.

If you have no blindness skills training place in your area, contact the O&M
department at Michigan State in Kalamazoo for resources.

When you apply for a dog, you have to put in the application the name of
your mobility instructor to prove you have the prerequisite training before
training with a dog. Also, Leader has some kind of class to get one ready
for a dog.
