Danielle,
I'm not Marsha but am Deafblind and my dog alerts.
First you have to decide what you want the alert to be. Something the dog can do if you are sitting, standing or laying. I chose a nose touch to my leg.
First you get that behavior on cue. The dog does it reliably in all different places and situations. Then you start adding sounds. I like to use the timeer on my phone so I can tell when it goes off. When it goes off, I ask for the nose to leg behavior and click and treat. Once she is doing that chain of alarm, nose on leg, I start asking her to find the source of the sound and then treat.
So the final chain is
sound, alert, show.
You can do this with all kinds of sounds, alarms, door knocks, someone calling your name etc. I am just starting this training with Soleil now.
