Hello:

I agree with Nicole. There seem to be a few people on the list that are so quick to throw out the "then you shouldn't get a dog" statement. First there was Dan saying just because some of us prefer certain breeds or maybe don't want a shedding dog we shouldn't have a dog. Now I'm reading if I like to sleep in I shouldn't get a dog. In my mind a statement like that is not putting yourself in anothers boots but just looking at it from one's own framework. The better information is approximately how long can a dog go without being relieved. Often those people who say they like to sleep in are the same people who go to bed at midnight or later. The odd time I haven't taken Bogart out until 10:30 or 11am and if I just told you that you might freak out about how vruel I'm being to my dog but if you asked clarifying questions you'd learn that he was last out after midnight or something like that.

Rebecca I don't disagree that if you have a small baby and a dog it all could be too much and that is worth sharing with others but to tell people they shouldn't have a dog because they have a small baby, because they stay up late because this or that isn't productive. Telling people that these are issues you've encountered in your life and they should consider them before getting a dog is productive and useful.

I know before I got Bogart I was very anxious about getting a dog and generally, this list was very helpful in lowering my level of anxiety but our goal should be to inform potential dog owners of all the variables that effected us since having our dogs and see if any of those things hit home for them to help them make the best decision.

Rebecca,

Why do you have to compare everything to children? And why do you
turn every question into "maybe you should not get a dog"? Sometimes, you
right, but, a lot of the time, you make things sound a lot worse than they
really are. Everyone knows that not getting a dog is an option, and they do
not need it dangled in front of their face every time that they ask a
question. Yes, maybe having a dog was not worth it for you, but it is for
some people.
As for how long a dog can hold it, as others have said, it depends.
Generally, I feed and water Lexia three to four hours before I go to bed,
and then I take Lexia out just before I go to bed. She can hold it for ...
Say ... 12 hours, maybe, but I usually do not sleep that long anyway. I do
not let her drink that much after she comes in for the last time, just
enough to wet her whistle. Also, remember that a dog is not consuming food
or water while sleeping, so, as long as a dog empties the bladder just
before going to bed, a dog can usually hold it for quite a while. Some older
dogs do have problems with leaking, but there are medicines to help with
that.

Or, you do what a lot of us do which is stumble outside, let
the dog go potty, then go back inside and go to bed.
In all seriousness, if sleeping in matters to you don't get a dog. I no
longer use a dog, partly because I discovered that after being up a good
portion of the night with my first child, getting up to take a dog out was
its own level of hell.
What we can and can't tolerate, and what we will and won't tolerate varies
depending on many factors. If you need or want to sleep in, know that and
don't let others convince you it isn't valid.

Ceci,
I have an answer to your second question.
How long a dog can hold their water depends on how old the dog is , how much
they drink, and if their are any health problems. A healthy adult dog can
hold it for up to 18 hours. Trust me, a college kid who partakes in the
night life, stays up late and sleeps in late would know! Just take 'em
outside right before you go to bed.
If your dog is an adolescent, I don't believe they can hold it quite as
long. But if your dog can hold it for an entire flight to Europe, it should
be able to wait while you sleep in.
Usually, dogs will let you know if they really need to go out. Worst case,
your dog will wake you, and you'll have to run outside right quick before
returning to bed.
