Hi!
Just wanted to update on Jenny's work lately... it's been a bit of a rough go over the past few weeks as temperatures dropped far below freezing pretty much overnight. On Thursday we had a massive dump of snow - a foot in 36 hours - so the sidwalks vary in how clear they are. We're finding out what works, what doesn't, and reimprovising as we go.
Today, a friend and I took Jenny to the park; when we were close to the street, I clipped her leash to her collar. Suddenly, Jenny took a sharp turn to the right. I was about to redirect her when I heard the cars coming down the avenue. If we'd kept going straight like I wanted to, we would've been in the middle of the busy road!
We got to the bus stop, and we got off the bus uneventfully. Jenny was doing great walking a steady pace on the ice... all of a sudden, i heard a car toot its horn twice. Didn't think much of it, until I heard cars zoom past my left shoulder. I then realized that we were actually walking on the road - a very VERY busy road!
To my right was a big snowbank - 3 feet deep and at least that wide - and no way to climb over it. So for over 1/2 a block we walked calmly close to the edge of the road, with cars zooming past us, and as soon as we got to the sidewalk, Jenny took a sharp right, and we walked home.
I asked my husband about it, and he didn't know off-hand if the city had cleared the sidewalk along that block. We drove by it tonight, and he confirmed that there is only a very narrow, well-hidden path, certainly not wide enough for Jenny and I to walk safely. So as scary as it is, I'm glad she took the seemingly safest course of action... but I will be calling the city tomorrow and asking them to clear that windrow off the sidewalk!
So proud!
Daryl
