[nagdu] guide dogs in hotels

I have never contacted a hotel in advance to let them know I have a guide
dog. I travel and stay in hotels probably 12 to 20 nights per year. I've
only ever had one hotel say a word about the dog and that was to ask for ID.
A brief conversation got that cleared up.

I live in a very small town, where the water is not chlorinated or
fluoridated. My older guide will sometimes refuse to drink the water,
especially when we travel to larger cities where there is stuff in the
water. I generally bring tap water from home for him. My younger guide
doesn't seem to mind the water.

My younger guide does better in a portable crate when I stay a hotel with
her. My older guide does fine loose in the hotel room. I do not leave my
guides in the room alone.

I am currently working two guide dogs, swapping back and forth between the
two. I do not work them both at the same time. My older guide is
transitioning into retirement and the younger into full time work. In case
that was confusing above.

Oh, I also give a lot more relief breaks when I travel because the routine
is different, the water is different, it's more work for them and because I
also use relief time as sniffing time and just relaxing time outside, which
they enjoy.

HTH and have fun!
Julie

Hi all,

In January, I’ll be traveling with my chorus for a weekend retreat in
Orlando – an exciting few days of workshops, performances, and seminars!
This will be my first time “away from home” with York, and I welcome any
travel tips you have. Are there any do’s and don’ts of staying in hotels?
Should I contact the hotel in advance to say that York is coming with me? Do
you bring a crate for your dog, or just a bed?

I welcome any wisdom you have gathered!

With best,
Emily & York
