[nagdu] guide dogs in hotels

Emily,

My general guidance is to not give advance notice that you will be accompanied by a service dog, since the presence of your dog is irrelevant. Many times, giving advance notice only creates problems because they assume you told them for a reason and, not knowing the reason, make further assumptions about what the reason is. This results in them putting you in a pet-friendly room, putting you on the first floor, or other such accommodations that you may not wish. If, however, you do have a specific need, such as a walk-in shower or other accessibility needs in the room, this might be something to share in advance; however, if the only concern is your guide dog, I encourage you to not say a thing about it. I will also say that you should not have any issues with hotels in Orlando. If you do, please call the NAGDU Information & Advocacy Hotline at 888-NAGDU411 (888-624-3841). We have a very strong chapter in Orlando and the Vice President is a guide dog user herself.

Fraternally yours,
Marion Gwizdala

Subject: [nagdu] guide dogs in hotels

Hi all,

In January, I’ll be traveling with my chorus for a weekend retreat in Orlando – an exciting few days of workshops, performances, and seminars! This will be my first time “away from home” with York, and I welcome any travel tips you have. Are there any do’s and don’ts of staying in hotels? Should I contact the hotel in advance to say that York is coming with me? Do you bring a crate for your dog, or just a bed?

I welcome any wisdom you have gathered!

With best,
Emily & York
