[nagdu] Teaching Relieving was RE: trouble with relieving

I am a graduate of GDF/AmericasVetDogs, on my second dog, and they also pick
up the first couple days
in the break area. Those of us who were in school getting a new dog already
knew the basic so we were allowed
to do our own pickups.

When I first came home with my new dog in August he would occasionally go on
the sidewalk while walking
but after a few days of encouraging him to go in the grass or in the street
he just automatically does it. When my
dog wants to do a number one he goes around me in circles, when these can
ago eight number two he makes little tight circles in front of me.

I assume that the person writing that is having such a problem with knowing
when his dog is going is totally blind
therefore it's going to take longer for him to adjust to his new dog and its
habits in the way it relieves itself. However
I believe that is instructor is responsible for teaching this person the
habits that particular dog and that should've been done
on day one. As I know nothing about the school he's attending and have no
way of knowing what they're teaching
methods.

The only thing I can compare to is the guide dog school that I have gone to
twice and have had two very successful
experiences. I may be have somewhat of an advantage over some blind members
of the community as I still have
usable vision. I am not able to read without magnification help and what I
do see is about the size of a business card.

I know that I have answered many questions over the last few years of having
a guide dog, I served one year on my school's alumni
associations Council, where I did mostly advocacy with the veterans. I find
it interesting to read the posts
that are being put on nagdu.

Hi Deanna, I'm not a GDB grad, I'm a Seeing Eye grad, but the first few days
we don't pick up either. The reason for that ii because in the beginning
the dogs do not like being touched when they are relieving. They don't know
us from the man in the moon.
And they aren't used to being in a relieving area. But trust me, by the
time we left to go home with our dogs, we all knew how to pick up after
them, and to know whether they were doing a number
1 or 2. (Grin). That's why the trainers pick up at first. It's
not for us, it's for the dogs. Peace, Debby and Neena
