[nagdu] dog parks was Countdown to NYC - 5 days!

Hi all,
I used to live close to a dog park, and I took Pascal there a few times, always with someone sighted to help keep an eye on him. There were a few other dogs there, but not too many. Pascal didn't really play with the other dogs, and his off-leash recall was horrible! I moved and we have stopped going. His off-leash recall is sooooo much better at home, where he is not distracted by other dogs and smells.
I personally would be nervous about taking my dog to a big dog park in NYC alone.
The funny thing is that Pascal loves to play with other guide dogs, but he won't play with most pet dogs. He is prejudiced I guess!
I do love to have puppy play dates, where Pascal will get together with my friend's guide dogs. We typically do this at Conventions as a stress reliever for the pups. I've even thrown Birthday parties for Pascal and invited all his doggy friends. Yes, I know I am crazy (smiles).

I do take my dogs to the local dog park. I live in a small town. Sometimes there's another dog there. Very occasionally there's more than one other dog there. They love to run there and I love to watch them run and have fun.

Yes, they could get into things. Yes, another dog could be unpleasant. Yes, they could pick up some hideous disease. Yes, someone could climb over the fence and steal them without my immediate knowledge. But everything has some amount of risk. Crossing the street is a risk. Feeding them commercially prepared dog food is a risk. I weigh the risk and the benefit and decide if it's worth it. To me, the dog park is worth it.

Julie
