I feel that the last sentence of the message to which I am replying sums it
up for most of us. Maybe we could do better, but at least we are doing
something by looking at the ingredients and not taking the "what's
cheapest" route.
In response to a message earlier in the thread:
Okay, so buying 100 pounds is not a good idea, but something like 30 is not
bad. For some of us, it's not necessarily easy to get dog food as we rely on
others to help us get it and/or order it. Also, although not 100% certain,
if you keep the dog food in some kind of sealed bag and/or air tight
container, it is less likely to go bad. I have screw top dog food bins for
the dog food. Sometimes, I screw the lid on so tight that I have a hard time
getting it off.
Finally, I'm not a big fan of changing dog food often. Our dogs go places,
and we need to be able to know that they are not going to have to relieve
too much or get sick. Some dogs can and will eat anything, even grass and
paper, and not have a problem with it. Other dogs, though, are very
sensitive to having their food changed. Often, different food types have
different amounts of fiber, and this can affect how often your dog needs to
do his/her business and the consistency of the stool. Some dogs are also
allergic to some foods.

I find it kind of interesting and humerous that we lable beef, chicken,
carrots and the like as human food. Not all humans eat those foods and
there are certainly animal competetors for those nutritional resources.

There was a time when what we call food didn't come in a bag, box or pouch.
There was a time when food didn't even come from a store. People and
animals grew it, raised it, hhhhhhhhhunted it or gathered it.

I still feed my dogs a prepared kibble. I also eat macaroni from a box.
Neither is optimal and I know it. I do the best I can with the financial
and time resources I have.
