Cindy,
Correct me if I'm wrong, Tracy. The dog associates the reward with the
action. There has to be more to the situation than just the harness
being on and they're at a stand-still, but you're on the corner, and
heyyyyy,he found the pole or button for you, so now he gets a reward!
Behaviors such as sniffing  and digging can also be associated with verbal cues.
