Hi,

Is Made in China clearly stated on the labels? I don't buy many pet treats, but my cat is particularly fond of kitty treats, and I don't want to lose his furry highness either.

** SAGE Pet Health Alert **

Please Do Not Feed Your Pets
 Treats Made in China

For some time now, SAGE Centers' veterinary specialists have been advising pet owners not to feed their dogs and cats treats made in China because of health safety concerns widely observed throughout the veterinary community, including our own patient experience.

We are sending you this SAGE Pet Health Alert as a fresh reminder.

The FDA has been aware of pet health concerns related to China-made jerky pet treats since 2007 and has been investigating. They have not yet issued any formal recall. Concerns, though, are mounting.

On May 16, 2014, the FDA published an updated report, titled, "Questions and Answers Regarding Jerky Pet Treats." In it, the FDA reviews the issue, offers tips for pet owners and outlines how to submit a report of suspected illness. Click here to read this FDA report.

According to the new report, as of May 1, 2014, the FDA has received pet illness reports for more than 5,600 dogs and 24 cats. These include more than 1,000 canine deaths. 3 human illnesses have also been reported.

"We don't know exactly what's happening but we do think there is some connection with illness in dogs and China jerky treats," says SAGE internal veterinary medicine specialist Heidi McClain, DVM, DACVIM. "Why take the risk? I don't think there is any reason to feed jerky treats from China at all."

This past week, Petco announced that they are taking China-sourced products off their shelves.

That sparked a flurry of media attention, including a KTVU Channel 2 News at 10 segment featuring Dr. McClain that aired on Tuesday, May 20, 2014. For a link to the broadcast, click here.

Please feel free to share this SAGE Pet Health Alert.
