Janice, I don't recommend that you do this by yourself.  Ticks 
are very small, move quickly, and getting rid of them is not 
easy.  You can use a match, but then you could burn your dog.  I 
think you probably need to take your dog either to a vet or 
groomer and have the dog bathed and dipped in some kind of flea 
and tick preventive and then find a different preventive that 
specifically gets rid of ticks.    Peace,    Debby
