[nagdu] vaccinations

Danielle,
I'm with you on wanting my dogs to have healthy immune systems, so I
don't get as overprotective of them as I would sort of like to be when
they are pups. Still, it seems like there is a lot of weighing of risk
involved, as well as considering possible consequences. So I decided to
do the routine puppy vaccinations again with Loki, including kennel
cough, since he goes to a groomer regularly. I also debated whether to
keep him in the yard or in safe areas until his last parvo shot had
kicked in fully vs. taking him out for socialization at that key period.
As it was, he was exposed to a number of things at home, so I don't
think I lost too much by keeping him safe. There's a lot of parvo in the
ground around here and dogs walking everywhere, so the risk seemed high.
Since parvo is so catastrophic, the consequences of betting wrong and
having him get it before he was protected seemed too extreme to take the
chance.
I've decided to give him the last round of boosters at a year, then go
to just rabies every three years after that, as we've done with our
other two dogs. Rabies is just too catastrophic to take chances with,
and it's required to get a dog license anyway, so that one seems like a
no-brainer. The risk of exposure in this area is low, but there's no
telling if someone will bring an infected animal into the area and let
it loose.
So far, our dogs haven't reacted adversely to vaccines, so that's nice.
If one of them starts showing symptoms of reaction, then it will be time
to reconsider.
