[nagdu] Fake Service Dogs

Michael,
I understand these service dogs are already covered under the ADA, and
I am very familiar with what they can do for their handlers. I was
countering Sandra's point that service dogs should only be for those
with physical disabilities, or disabilities that are apparent.
Here's her quote:
"It was sure easier when the laws were not so liberal, when the only
dogs allowed were guide, hearing or service dogs for physically
handicapped. Then it was obvious the person was disabled. Now with
all the mentally ill claiming they need service dogs, it is almost
impossible for a business owner to know what to do or think."

My point:
Disabilities like autism, PTSD, and epilepsy are mental handicaps,
even though they have physical effects on a person. You can't tell a
person has any of these conditions just by watching them go about
their daily business. And because they are not apparent to the public,
the only true way to prove whether a person has a mental handicap is
if they present a doctor's note. Not saying that anyone should or has
to, just saying that you wouldn't be 100% certain of the truth
otherwise. I mean, outside of witnessing an episode, how could you
really know? Frankly, it shouldn't matter. Businesses should be
educated on what questions they can ask service dog handlers, and what
kinds of responses are legitimate.
Service dogs trained to work for these individuals perform fascinating
tasks, so we shouldn't go back to "the old way" where there were
strict limitations on who could have service dogs.
Hope that clears things up.
