[nagdu] "what's his name?"

With Monty, I do not use his name before guide commands. Jetta was trained
name first, then command. I don't always use her name first because I'm
sloppy like that. she responds to what I want regardless, but her name
first does get better results.

I do give out my dog's names to whoever asks. It's extremely rare that I
have someone call my dog by name. Mostly I think people ask because they
are trying to start a conversation and asking the dog's name is what pops in
their head. I don't think they really care much about what the dog's name
actually is.

The exception is kids. When I teach at the after school programs, the kids
want to know names because they seem to like to ask questions about my
specific dog and the specific name helps them communicate better. They
will say my dog's names and the dog will look, but that's it. I've never
had a kid call or attempt to get my dog to do some unauthorized thing.

There are a couple of people who know my dogs names and have used them
inappropriately, but I'm not exactly sure how I would not tell my husband my
dog's name. I put these issues in the category of we need to have a chat,
not an issue with giving out the name.

Viviana and others,
I've always been curious how you can keep from saying the name so others can
hear it. I'm deaf so have no idea, but when I cue my dog, I use her name
before the cue, so
Soleil forward, or left or whatever. People are going to hear it. So I
trained her to ignore it if it's a stranger calling her, and to alert me to
it if it's someone we know trying to get her attention to get my attention.
But I'm curious if you don't use your dog's name when working her to prevent
people from knowing it?
