There are times when I don't care if people know my dog's name but there are other times when some instinct or some other thing jus sands out that I shouldn't use my dog's real name but it is often subjective for me.

Mostly I think people ask because they are trying to start a conversation and asking the dog's name is what pops in their head. I don't think they really care much about what the dog's name actually is.

When I teach at the after school programs, the kids want to know names because they seem to like to ask questions about my specific dog and the specific name helps them communicate better. They will say my dog's names and the dog will look, but that's it. I've never had a kid call or attempt to get my dog to do some unauthorized thing.

I think that the decision of when and even if you do want to share your dog's name with others should be up to the handler, not the school.
