[nagdu] "what's his name?"

Dan Weiner dcwein at dcwein.cnc.net

I for some reason, think I told this story before on list but I can't
remember. So here goes and if you heard it, either laugh with me again or
delete or whatever.
Well I usually give out my dog's name if I'm actually having a conversation
with someone, a friend or what have you, I try to avoid it however if it's
just a drive-by person as I like to say, someone who walks past and asks the
dog's name.
But anyway...Dan's dog numero dos, Evan and Dan sitting at the bus stop at
six thirty in the morning in Laurel, Maryland.
Time, March, 2005.
A guy sidles up to me who by the smell and by his behavior seems like he had
a few too many at one time.
In such cases I would give out my trainner from Leader Dog's name, Phil. No
offence, Phil, but it's the name I reserved to give out to people who seemed
a bit iffy.
So when the strange and somewhat wobbly fellow said "whasss your dogs
name?"
I said "Oh it's Phil."
I forgot all about it. Five minutes later the bus comes and I utter those by
now famous words "Evan, forward, find the bus". As I climb up the stairs I
hear the aforementioned hung-over or totally soused guy saying "Hey, wait a
minute, you said his name was Phil." I said without missing a beat "didn't
you know, Seeing Eye dogs have both a first and middle name, I usually
don't tell people his last name, though, sorry".
The bus driver broke out laughing.

Good day to all.
Dan and whatever my dog's name is

While I generally will give my dog's name, mostly because, as others have
said, it's either too much of a PITA to come up with a fake one, or I just
can't be bothered, or it's a good exercise to keep my dog responsive to me
and not others, all of that. ... Occasionally, I get annoyed and will tell
someone my dog's name is Tralfaz. To date, I don't believe anyone has gotten
the reference.

had a kid call or attempt to get my dog to do some unauthorized thing.
