[nagdu] process of getting a guide dog from leader dog

Joh, do you not live with your parents? If you do, that proved to be
difficult back when you had Molly as I recall. Perhaps the day will come
when you will live on your own and have the opportunity to do more routes. I
never knew any schools expected you to be able to show three routes. Anyway,
You will get there. You have made the effort and that's importance. As far
as the Commission for the Blind goes, they need to understand that the
confidence you feel is really a test of whether you need additional mobility
assistance, not their testing. Maybe someone in Michigan could help you with
this.
Cindy

Hi,
I've contacted the Michigan Commission for the blind.
The commission thinks that I don't need anymore Mobility training and they
don't want to spend anymore money on Mobility training for me.
The commission said that they would send a mobility instructer to do a
mobility examination, but that never happened.
The counselar who I'm talking to is still in training.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
John Sanders

Hi John:

I also live in an area where I don't have a lot of different routes I can
take. I have many stops along that one main route but, that doesn't qualify
as different routes to some schools. I take a cab or bus to other areas.
If you don't mind a suggestion, Contact your local rehab agency and and
request an O&M instructor. That person can help you establish different
routes and work with you on those routes until you can travel them
independently and with confidence. It will take you some time but, in the
end, you will be more ready to try another guide dog. Good luck.

Sandra

Hi,
My area is very rural.
There is not much to do out here.
Leader dog wants 3 routes estabolished that I can do completely
independently.
I can think of two.
There is a speedway station a ways a way up the road where I live.
There's also a quality dairy store across from the speedway.
If I wanted to effectively get three routes in, I would have to take the bus
to another part of Okemos where there are other places to go.
Leader dog requires you to do three routes that you can do independently.
I had failed Misserably.
I called Leader dog and I talked with the client services representative and
they said that they were not going to submit my videos for addmissions to
review.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
John Sanders

Hi Tracy,

I thought the same thing for a second. But then I also thought, maybe there
are different places to go but just no very long routes to walk. I don't
know what's required for such an application, if there is a certain distance
that you have to walk or if it's just fine if you go to different shops or
other places, take a bus or train, just to show that you're able to do it.
John, it would be interesting to hear more about your area. Are there things
you could do more easily with your new guide?
