[nagdu] process of getting a guide dog from leader dog

Hello John,

Oh my, the old safety issue. Let me guess, this person knows nothing about blindness or the ability of blind people but she projects what she would not be able to do if she was suddenly blind.

Every one of us on this list has been told that we shouldn't do something or other because of safety. We have all developed a kind of deafness for this kind of thing and we try and evaluate each situation from our own point of view. I remember when I was five years old I was told I shouldn't ride a bike because I might get hurt. I ignored them and I did it any way. You have to spend your life doing this. I was told I couldn't do judo, I now have a black belt, I was told I couldn't be a good mother, I now have two wonderful grown children and one grandchild. Do you know how many time erik Weihenmeyer was told he couldn't climb Mt. Everest? He ignored them all and got to the top!

I suggest you find a local NFB chapter. Go to the meetings and that will give you a third route. You will meet lots of blind people who actually do things and have a positive attitude towards their blindness and life. It will also help with your depression.

You CAN live your life as YOU want to!

> You mention a home health care aid. What does she do for you? I ask because traveling to the school is easy. I'm wondering if you have the health to use a dog effectively and if that is what you want to spend your energy doing? I'm assuming you have some quite serious medical issues if you have a home health care aid, because as hungry as those women are for work, they don't just show up at your door unless you solicit them.
> Lastly, why would you seek out the opinion of someone who has no knowellege or experience with guide dogs? She may be a fine woman and a fine health care provider but she doesn't know squat about what a guide dog is like. Why not stick to subject matter experts (this list) for that?
