[nagdu] Trying to understand: denial of access bad allergies

I wouldn't have put of it that way. The company I use has over a hundred
drivers whom I mostly know. Actually, I haven't yet been refused yet but I
have gotten a couple of fussy drivers. It can be easier to let them know
rather than have to argue with someone who doesn't want to take you! Mostly
when I call a cab, I want to go! Not have to argue with the driver! I also
believe that if drivers are truly allergic, it gives them the chance to
refuse the order and give it to someone else.

Larry,

You make the point for not giving advance notice very well by
stating that doing so gives the cabbie the chance to refuse the fare. In
other words, you give the cabbie the opportunity to discriminate against
you.

I have never had an issue either. Because we have a shared ride system, I
always tell them whether or not Holly will be going. I feel it also gives
cabbies a right to refuse when the order goes out. Well sandy, I'd hate to
miss a cab in Indie! That city is really spread out!

Marion:

I have never had a problem getting a ride after letting them know I have qa
guide dog. I just hated driver's not knowing and then having a problem once
they arrived at my home. Also, I live in a suburb of Indianapolis. There
is not a local cab company so all cabs must come down from Indianapolis. It
would be very time consuming and cause many problems if I had problems with
a driver. The two companies I use both appreciate being told in advance so,
that is what

Sandra,

As you say, some of us will rush to our keyboards and I am one of them.
Advance notice does not serve you well as it creates a form of
discrimination referred to as unequal benefit. The dispatcher sends out a
message looking for a cab that will take a woman with a dog. No one bids on
the trip because they are given the choice and no one chooses to bid.

Then I call and do not tell them I have a dog and am questioned about why I
do not advise them in advance; after all, Sandra does. Once we decide we
will not be discriminated against and my right to be accompanied by my
service dog is protected by law, we will begin to resolve the issue of
discrimination. Companies do not have the choice of whether or not to serve
us any more than they have the choice of whether or not they will serve my
friend Terence because of his race. Until we demand our rights, our rights
will be trampled upon.

Fraternally yours,
Marion Gwizdala

Hi,

I avoid this problem by letting the cab company know I have a guide dog when
I call to request the ride. I know, a lot of you are going to rush to your
keyboards to argue about this but, for me, I find that is what works best.
When they know in advance, the drivers can't claim they didn't know I had a
dog. It also makes it easier for the driver to find me when I'm waiting
outside a busy business or office building. I do the same when making any
reservations for bus, train or air travel. Sometimes when we inform people
in advance, things go better for us in the end.

I ask because many people have different perspectives on this matter. We are
not all the same. Some would choose to handle a situation differently, as
Daryl expressed. It is not a 2question that I ask lightly, nor is a question
I ask simply because I am offended at a little name calling. I spoke frankly
to that person and told him exactly what I thought. However, I want to
understand all that surrounds this topic. I want to be sensitive to
othersb?T conditions, as I would ask that they be of my blindness. I also
want to make sure I know all I can about this issue: from the scientific
data to the personal opinions, so that I might become a more well rounded,
more thoughtful human being.
