[nagdu] Water

Yeah Julie, the vet rattled off a list of things that cause excessive
drinking, all of them very bad. But Krokus is clearly a healthy, young dog,
so the vet didn't really think it was any of those. Today it's cooler, and
he's not drinking much at all.
Ben went through several episodes of needing to rush out and have a huge
pee. The vet never figured out what was going on. It came and went for a
while, then stopped altogether. I'm hoping this is like that.
I expected the vet to hand me antibiotics, even without a clear need for
them, but he didn't, and I appreciate that.

Monty went through a phase where he was drinking what I thought was a lot.
I started measuring his water and was alarmed to find out he was drinking
12 cups a day. Then the first thing they do at the vet was to weigh him and

he had lost 10 pounds. I was panicking. The vet ran about every test he
had available. Everything came back fine. The vet said that the 12 cups
was on the high side of normal, but still okay. Monty drank a lot for a few
more days, then dropped back to a normal amount. He's picked up most of the
lost weight. No clue what caused it, but he's fine. Of course I feel like a
nut at the vet because he looks healthy, acts healthy and it feels like you
are over reacting. Ironically my husband was reading me the posters in the
waiting room. One was on aging and to bring your dog in right away if they
start drinking lots of water or lose weight.

My vet told me something interesting yesterday. A dog drinks about an ounce
of water per pound of body weight. A 60-pound dog is fine drinking about 2
quarts of water a day, 7-8 cups. I didn't know that. I guess I never
thought about it.

Krokus has been drinking a lot lately, and having some accidents in the
house if I forget to take him out every 2 or 3 hours, so I took him to the
vet. His urine sample looked OK, so now we're supposed to give him as much
water as he wants and keep track how much he drinks, so we can tell if it's
actually a lot. It is hot here, so that could be all it is. Or not; we'll
see. It's a bit complicated by having 2 dogs, but Ben is a camel and
doesn't drink much.
