[nagdu] nagdu Digest, Vol 123, Issue 11 follow

I use the command follow when I am with my wife and she uses a scooter to
get around and Gazoo just know he is to follow her now.
We also use the command follow like when I am at the doctor's office and the
technician or nurse wants me to go to a certain room
it works really well to use follow and Gazoo will follow the person into the
room and then be able to find the seat. He was not taught
this command but he picked up on it really easily and I find it works fine
for me. I still have some vision so that is an advantage for me versus
someone who has no light vision at all but I do have a hearing problem and
most of my vision loss is side vision and close-up,
so I can at least see a shadow of the area in which I'm at.

Hi Danielle,

I agree with Rox. I do follow the same way. Eva was not taught follow at
her guide dog school but, with consistent practice she very quickly became
an excellent follower. Having the person call her name to get her attention
has not caused any problems for us. I don't know what the deal is about not
mentioning the name. I think it gets the dog's attention so they will then
be expecting and listening for your next command. As I said, practice,
practice. In time, she will get better and more consistent. Good luck.

Sandra and Eva

Danielle,
I'm Deafblind and I'll tell you what I do.
I first set it up and have her follow. Then I have the person we're
following, check back every so often and if they notice her starting to lose
track, they will call her name, and that reminds her what she is supposed
to be doing.
I know for some people, it's a big no-no for other folks to know or use
their dog's name when she's working but my opinion is that we are all
different and I do what works for me, which may not work for someone else.
I have never had a problem with my dog getting distracted or putting me into
danger by someone calling her name.
Good luck!

Well, sometimes for medical care and such, it may be necisary to separate
them. It can be easier to treat them separately.

One thing that I learned while in class, which was new is to actually say
Nova, follow forward, or follow right, or follow left. That seems to help.
It isn't something that I do tons of, following. They don't really guide
when following, because they tend to just start looking at the person
they're following, which is why giving them commands is important. Then
they still focus
on you, and not just the person they're following. Peace,
Debby and Nova

Then you need to tell people to be more verbal, and perhaps you might want
to heel her sometimes in places where it's hard to hear and go sighted
guide. You all might be more comfortable. I don't like to have my dogs
follow for long distances, so I tend not to use the follow command very
much, except in restaurants when being shone a table. If it's very crowded
and noisy, then
it's hard for the dogs to know who they should be following.
Peace, Debby and Nova

Well, remember Danielle, her dog was also hurt and needed medical attention
as well. I'm just sorry that there weren't better communications, but am
sure things are working out okay. Figo
needs to heal, as well. Debby and Nova

Hello all,

I hope this message is not off topic and is appropriate and relevant to the
list. I, along with a few other GDB graduates are forming an alumni chapter
here in Massachusetts. If you are a GDB grad living in Massachusetts, I
would love for you to email me if you are interested in being a part of the
group. You can also participate if you are interested in GDB in any way or
have had a GDB guide and wish to stay connected or want to learn more about
GDB and their guide dogs. We just want this group to be a fun way for
handlers to connect and have a good time socializing with one another.
Please feel free to pass my message along to anyone you know living in
Massachusetts that would benefit from this. I can be reached at
minh.ha927 at gmail.com

Thanks,
Minh

I think in this case there was no choice. But the woman would be upset
because she didn't know the extent of her own injuries or the dog's. It's
just one of life's lemons, but the good news is they will be all right.

Well, sometimes for medical care and such, it may be necisary to separate
them. It can be easier to treat them separately.

ADA.

I think they tried to reassure her. She had to be in pain and frightened and
a host of other things that made her react in ways she wouldn't have if she
had been calm. It was just an awful situation, but she's going to be all
right and so is the dog.
