Hi Sean I am very sorry that Franklin needs to retire. It is the hardest to retire any guide dog, but if you have had a good partnership with your first one, I believe it can make it the hardest to let go of.
I have retired four guides, and it is not very easy to let the friendship and partnership that has helped us daily, for a long time go as it is hard to let them retire, but you will come to realize that you are giving back to Franklin, by letting him enjoy his later years relaxing and enjoying not worrying about you.
Sean just know others and myself, have been there and didn't enjoy it either, but having a guide dog there are many good things about it, but retirement is one of the hardest times for all users.
Louise and princess Kiara who is looking forward to many years of work

So today Heidi came out to look in on me and Franklin since she was here 6 months ago, my vision only slightly better then.
We played catchup for a bit and we went out on a walk so she could look at Franklin’s work, my my boyfriend and his guide: also a black labrador with us, so we could all get a walk into before the heat hit us.
We did are long way to the grocery store and just walked like normal. Heidi watching me and Franklin work, we walked I knew I would hear her say what I didn’t want to hear - that she says its time for Franklin to retire. I felt like I wanted to stop breathing,to make her take her words back,..
Since I was overstepping him, and every time , I tried to get him to speed up, he would go slower,
We start on our way home, my mind racing with confusion, not really paying attention to my surroundings0 and we walk right through a strip of grass thing between- parking spaces,
When we finally made it back home, with Heidi doing the usual stuff- that she would switch my case to active and they would start looking for a dog for me a wait of 3 to 6 months.
She left, later on me calling my mom to give her the news, and my brother and then my sister,
my brother and sister being a bit more of support, and my mom not rallying understanding. what I was saying,
I would love for my mom to take Franklin, but dad doesn’t really want to, still going to keep trying though.
my boyfriend’s mom said she would love to adopt Franklin.
I really don’t know what to do right now, my mind is still confused, I don’t think its really hit me yet.
Franklin is my first dog and is 8.
yours,
Sean & Guide dog: Franklin
