[nagdu] Important lesson learned. Dogs cannot be trusted.

Hi Abigail, 
Some dogs are very, very food motivated, and for them, nothing is more rewarding than eating.  I have a dog like this.  I work food refusal with her every day, and she still is not too trustworthy around food at home.  I have had to dogproof my house, removing food from her reach.  
I know that for her, this will always be a struggle, and that I will always have to work on it and be very aware.  
So my point is, if your dog is very interested in food, you may have to work daily with food refusal and still dogproof your home.  Only you can decide if this is something you are willing to do.
For me, it's worth it because Soleil is a wonderful worker with the greatest heart, and I can deal with the food thing.  Other people can't or are unwilling to do this.
If I were you, I'd do like you said, keep her either on lead or confined and work several short sessions daily on food refusal,  and then graduall you give her more freedom.  Keeping in mind, that she may be one of those dogs who will always struggle and need frequent brushups on this particular thing.
