[nagdu] GL and TSE leash

No, unless there was confusion among trainers, I was taught to use the
three-quarter leash as I described. That is, the small snap attached to the
gl and the large snap attached to the live ring on the collar. That is how
you said you have used it before. Sometimes I have tugged on the right side
of the leash as I use the gl with the three-quarter, just enough of a tug to
distract Bella's attention from scavenging. She does not cry out, but it
lifts her head and focuses her again. I have been using dogs since 1977 and
have experienced the frustration of being told incompatible advice from
other TSE trainers different from my own during class. I eventually reached
the point where I finally spoke up and said, please take up your concern
about my work with my trainer. That sort of exchange occurred when an
observing trainer, (usually not one who was inclass that particular month)
asked, "Who told you to do that?"

I thought the three-quarter leash was putting the little snap on the GL,
then putting the big snap on the ring that would ordinarily make a long
leash. I tried that, and then I could put the leash on my wrist, but there
wasn't enough tension, so I went back to the, um, split leash with one snap
on the collar and the other on the GL. It's working well, I think, but it
feels like the leash is catching on the harness loops or something.
I had a dog who strongly preferred a loose leash, so maybe I'm not used to
any tension in the leash.
I wish we'd worked more on this in class. My last dog didn't do well with
the GL, so I never used it. This class, I guess the trainer figured
everyone knew the GL, so she didn't talk about it much, even though I said I
didn't know it well. Guess I should have said that five times more. Oh
well.
Tracy

Tracy,

This is Debbie Baker, also a TSE graduate; I agree with Aleeha Dudley about
the amount of tension on the leash when Krokus is wearing the gl. As you
are doing, attaching the leash to his collar, and the small snap to the gl,
you are creating what my most recent trainer called a three-quarter leash.
He told me to put no more than two or three fingers to hold the leash loop
because, as Aleeha stated, putting it on your wrist as usual would use too
much tension.

I believe it is supposed to have some tension in it. In fact, when I spoke
to a trainer about the way I was doing it, he told me to make sure that I
shortened up on the right side of the leash, the part that was attached to
the gentle leader, so that I could feel exactly where my dog's head was
going. If I couldn't already. I do not put the leash over my wrist if Dallas
is wearing the gentle leader. He does not appreciate that very much.
