Clare,
Welcome to the list!
I'm an owner-trainer, in the process of retiring my first poodle guide
Mitzi, who will be 9 in June. I have an almost 11-month-old poodle Loki
in training to take over in another year or so. I was hoping the new dog
would overlap Mitzi's working life, but had to put off getting a new pup
for a year, so there will be a gap between dogs. I could probably keep
Mitzi working another year without disaster or distress, but a lot of
little things are telling me it's time to just transition her into a
life of leisure and that she is ready for that, too. I don't plan to
declare Loki officially finished until he is at least 2, and we'll see
even then. Poodles mature more slowly than some of the other breeds, and
the males more slowly than that. So for now, no hurry, we'll see how he
does and ease him into what he's ready for. I imagine I will be plenty
impatient by this time next year, but I would rather he grow into a
confident guide than to rush him into too much responsibility. We shall
see...
