[nagdu] Training dogs?

Hi Daryl,
I would love to work with animals. When I was younger, I wanted to become a Vet Tech. Unfortunately, at the time, I did not persue the education for that career, because I believed the nay sayers that told me a visually impaired person could never do that kind of work. Currently, I am working as a Receptionist and am also a Licensed Massage Therapist, but my passion is still animals and medicine, so I'm often considering changing careers.
I would start by getting your foot in the door. Try volunteering at a local animal shelter, doggie day care facility, vet office, or even consider working for a pet store. I just recently started volunteering again at the local SPCA, and I'm very excited about socializing with the dogs, and improving their obedience skills along the way. Sure, I've had a few challenges (due to my vision) doing certain things at the shelter, but I've managed to do fairly well.
I hope that others can be more helpful! /smiles/.

Subject: [nagdu] Training dogs?

Hi!
If this is off-topic, forgive me... it does tangentially relate to dogs and guide dogs... so figured I would ask you lovely people for some opinions.
Without getting into a lot of personal stuff, I'm becoming frustrated and disillusioned with my current job, and finding work is annoying at best and downright impossible at worst. I'm thinking about changing direction and doing something related to training/helping dogs - service dogs, pet dogs, whatever. Anyone who has or is doing this have any pointers for me? I know some of you have owner-trained guide dogs, worked at guide dog schools, animal shelters, etc.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks!

Daryl
