Truer words have never been said, Marion, thanks you so much and thank you
and NAGDU for your on-going work.
I know I shouldn't just write a post agreeing with someone and not saying
much else, but don't worry, I'll be a good boy from now on.

Dan

Cindy,

As you and most of us are aware due to our involvement in NAGDU and
the NFB, there are several forms of discrimination other than denial of
benefit. For the edification of those who may not know, what Cindy is
describing is a form of discrimination the ADA refers to as a separate
benefit - being separated from other patrons because of one's disability.

Additionally, in response to Aleeha's post about those who may not
like our dogs, may be allergic to them, or have a fear of dogs, it is best
for us to remember that these issues are not our issues. Furthermore, such
assertions are nearly impossible to prove and, often times, are merely
excuses. I believe we should not subject ourselves to the whims of those who
might claim - whether they exist or not - that their objections are
reasonable. As a matter of law, we are a protected class and cannot be
discriminated against because of our disability and our choices to mitigate
them. Such protected classes are established because of a record of
discrimination and, if we subject ourselves to such whims, we promulgate the
discrimination.

Fraternally yours,

Marion Gwizdala, President
National Association of Guide Dog Users Inc. (NAGDU) National Federation of
the Blind

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise
expectations because low expectations create barriers between blind people
and our dreams. You can live the life you want! Blindness is not what holds
you back.

It makes sense until you have the history we have of discrimination. You
have to be polite and firm, but the things hyou say make us separately
equal. It's like the time I went into Dennys with my dog and they were
willing to seat us in a section that had been closed off because they
weren't serving that many people. They were seating me yes, so that was
equal; they were seating me separately for fear my dog would be of concern
to other customers, separate.
Cindy

Raul, I think that your and Marion's positions make a lot of sense and
are a good basis for a general rule. I just wanted to point out that
when a company such as Delta has exhibited behavior that shows they go to
extra lengths to accommodate guide dog handlers and their dogs by giving
them free expedited telephone ticket purchasing, premium seats at economy
seat costs, and priority seat assignments, it might behoove us to be a
little more flexible about rejecting advance notice in such a situation.

David and Claire Rose in Clearwater, FL

I hope this makes sense.
