David,
I don't want to be too contentious, but I believe preferential
treatment has the unintended effect of promulgating misconceptions about our
blindness by affording us a compensation for which we did not pay? This is a
little like what we hear so many times about God giving us a keener sense of
eharing or touch to compensate for our blindness. Perhaps we should all have
another read of "The Pros & Cons of Preferrential Treatment" by Kenneth
Jernigan.
Fraternally yours,
Marion Gwizdala, President

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise
expectations because low expectations create barriers between blind people
and our dreams. You can live the life you want! Blindness is not what holds
you back.

Raul, I think that your and Marion's positions make a lot of sense and
are a good basis for a general rule. I just wanted to point out that
when a company such as Delta has exhibited behavior that shows they go
to extra lengths to accommodate guide dog handlers and their dogs by
giving them free expedited telephone ticket purchasing, premium seats at
economy seat costs, and priority seat assignments, it might behoove us
to be a little more flexible about rejecting advance notice in such a
situation.
David and Claire Rose in Clearwater, FL
I hope this makes sense.
