[NAGDU] Ring the bell

When I taught this I didn't use the clicker at all. To be fair, it was
Christmas time and I had every intention to do a formal training, but life
happens and I never got around to it. What did happen was I hung the bells
on the door and for about two days I'd give them a jingle and say outside as
I took Belle and Monty outside. Then they started ringing them
independently to indicate they wanted out.

Having such good luck with that method, I did the same thing with Jetta, but
it took her a few weeks to catch on. She's much smarter than Belle was and
probably about the same as Monty, so I have no idea why it took her longer
to catch on. She was getting used to a lot of new things though, just
having come here to live.

All three of them ring the bells just to go out for fresh air, to mess
around or even to get my attention when it's food time. Belle was really
bad about excessive use of the door bells, but that could have been her
serious confusion. Mostly I take them out even if I know they don't have to
go, but I know they want to stretch and get some fresh air. Otherwise I
tell them no and to go lay down or whatever.

Don't know if any of that is helpful, but there you go!

Subject: [NAGDU] Ring the bell

Krokus's idea of letting me know he has to go out off-schedule is to come
look at me. Or it could mean he wants to be petted, or play. So he had an
accident the other day, because I didn't figure it out soon enough.

I'm trying to teach him to ring some bells on the doorknob when he wants to
go out. It took about a minute to teach him to ring the bell, using the
clicker. I'm stopping to have him ring the bell every time before we go out
to park. This morning, all he wanted to do was ring the bell! I had to
stop c&T-ing so we could get out the door.

I'd like ideas of how to show him that ringing the bell means we're going
out. Is there a quicker way than doing it every time we go out? Should I
have him ring it first, then put on his leash, as I will if he gets the idea
and rings it himself? Or have him on leash before he rings it, so we're
ready to go?

Now he is ringing it and I have the clicker in my hand, ready to click. I
guess the next step is to hide the clicker in my fist or pocket, so it's not
a signal to ring the bell?

Thanks for any ideas.

Tracy
