Hi Caitlyn,I've only got fifteen years in as a Guide Dog Owner, roughly half your experience,  so I have to be at least half awake to park my pup.  LOLMaybe in a few more years I'll learn the knack of doing it while asleep.....

Yours, Very Sincerely And Respectfully,

Wayne M. Scace

Sandra,

We were encouraged to pick up after our dogs when I went to Seeing Eye for three dogs, from roughly 2004 through 2012.  when I got my first guide dog back in the dinosaur ages(read the ’80’s), from GDB, we were also encouraged to pick up, and those who didn’t know how were taught.

when I got Maggie in 2013 from Gallant hearts, the trainer offered to pick up, but I declined and told him I’d do it myself-since I’d be doing it at home myself all the time anyway.  heck, after 30 years of guide dog use, picking up is no big deal for me and I can do it in my sleep.

Mark said when he got Jordan at Pilot, they showed him where the releif spot was, told him how often to take her out, and that was basically it.  Also, apparently, the releif spot they use is somewhat weird and makes it pretty impossible for the people in class to pick up after the dog because of a railing or something.
