If guide dog school is covered under FMLA, and I'm not sure it is, keep in mind that to qualify for FMLA you need to have worked for a company for over a year, and the company needs to be I think bigger than 50 people. The main point of my message is to make sure you understand FMLA laws and employer rights and responsibilities as well as yours as a guide dog handling employee. A new employer may not be as understanding as someone you have worked for for a while. Some companies are very nice and will work with you while others follow the letter of the law and may not in certain cases when they don't have to.

I just came home with my first guide in November! It is one of the most rewarding experiences in my life! Best of luck to you through this process and through the process of finding the right job.

When I went for my first guide dog I did not have specific routes but
travelled throughout a large city using public transportation on a
regular basis. I was a stay-at-home Mom at the time. I have been
working when I obtained 2 of my dogs. I think the time off is covered
under the family and medical leave act if you are in the U.S. In a
later email you said you are applying for your first guide dog and
looking for a job. I would put one of those on hold while you took
care of the other. If you believe the dog is more important than the
job right now I would put looking for a job on hold so you don't start
your job and immediately ask for time off to get the dog.
