Lisi, No, Leader Dogs no longer accepts donated dogs, or puppies. Nor do they rescue from shelters any longer.

Yours, Very Sincerely And Respectfully,

Wayne M. Scace

Leader Dogs, according to a book by Margaret Gibbs and written in 1984, at that time accepted public donations of both puppies and adult dogs after strict screening. I don't know if they still do. I think most likely resulting from this policy, individual dogs trained (and also pictured as either dogs in training or graduate dogs) by Leader Dogs during the early 1980's included not only the majority Labradors, Goldens, and Shepherds, but also at least one Husky-mix and a Belgian Tervuren (pictured jumping from a LD training van in harness). If my friend didn't have my copy of the book, I'd go through it again and make sure I'm not missing any others!

MIRA, a guide dog school in Québec with a newer campus in New York State, has long trained Bernese Mountain Dogs as guide dogs, and now I believe they almost exclusively train Bernese Mountain Dog/Labrador crosses as guides -- they call them "St. Pierre" or "Labranese".

I know that for the most part, the breeds which Seeing Eye trains are German Shepherds, Labradors, (black and yellow), Golden retrievers, back-crosses like Yahtzee, and in some cases, Boxers. While attending an evaluation at Lion's World Services For The Blind back in the summer of 1993, one of the counselors there was a Leader Dog user whose dog was a Doberman. I understand that Pilot, and possibly some other schools are training poodles. I won't swear to it, but I think I heard somewhere that there has been a Rotweiller (unsure of spelling) out there in use as a guide with somebody in the past.

I'm not talking about use  for other disabled-related services. If there is not such a list out there, is there a site where I can find out such information?
