Hello, everyone.
Thank you for the suggesions. I feel like all of you, uncomfortable and just not right to leave her outside in a strange yard, or home that many hours by herself. I have never done that, and never will. My decision is not to go, and I hope she understands. I totally respect anyone that does not like dogs in their homes. But, I have to do what is best for Becky. She is my main concern. Have a happy thanksgiving, everyone.

Hello FLAGDU and interested list serv members,
Last weekend I had the honor of attending the Texas affiliate's state
convention. I spent a great deal of time with the TXAGDU division. This is
a newly formed division and besides their division meeting they hosted the
president of NAGDU to conduct a seminar to local businesses regarding their
rights and responsibilities to equal access for guide dog users. It was a
great time all around! Below is a message to me from the treasurer of the
division about their "Yankee Candle" fundraising project. If any of you are
interested in supporting a sister/brother division see the details below.
Looking forward to seeing you all at our state convention and FLAGDU
division meeting in May!
With warmest regards,

Hello, everyone. Thank you for the suggestions regarding health insurance for Becky. I have another question and I really do not know what to do. My husband and I were invited for Thanksgiving at family's house. Where they live is a distance from our house. Usually, when we go down that way, we end up staying 7 to 8 hours. I talked to my sister-in-law. She said it was alright for me to bring Becky, but she does not like dogs in the house. So, I would have to put Becky outside while we were in the house. Becky is not an outside dog. And, I would feel like crap with my dog, the loveof my life, outside while I was sitting in the house with family. I really do not know what to do. Now, I really do not want to go. Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? Please, I need help with this.

Bring her crate. Negotiate with her that your pup will stay in a portable
crate. Or maybe she thinks Becky will jump all over her house and it is just
educating her that your dog will be a perfect lady at her home.
So just other ideas to hopefully help.
The human Becky, giggle.

Elise,
I don't think you're making a mountain out of a molehill at all. If it
were me, I would not go. I would see it as disrespect in general, and an
insistence that I put my guide dog in a strange yard for that long when
the dog is not used to being outside at all is too risky for the dog. My
dogs spend a lot of time outside, but even so I wouldn't want to bring
my guide someplace and leave him out alone for hours in a strange yard.
You might be able to explain the notion of "guide dog" to your
sister-in-law, but if she insists on leaving the dog outdoors, then I
think you should go with your gut and not go.
hth,
Tami

I'd say, "You know, we really we'd really like to come, but Becky is an
inside dog. I can't leave her outside by herself. On top of that I
would feel very uncomfortable without her by my side. Thank you so much
for inviting us. Maybe we can get together when it is warmer and we can
all be outside. Have a Happy Thanksgiving."

I would explain that my dog will be in harness and lying quietly at my side the entire time. if this doesn?t work then, you could either not go at all or, what about going but staying for a shorter period of time. unfortunately, i think that maybe she thinks you will let your dog run all over her home. personally, i don?t allow loose dogs in my home either. but, no, i would not put my guide outside in any back yard for 8 hours.
Take care;
Vivianna

There is no way that I would leave my guide dog out side by him self. I
don't think that any guide dog school would alow that and that could be
grounds for school to take back your guide dog. Could you leave with your
self if any thing happen to your guide dog. Some one could steal your dog. I
would stand my ground with your sister in law.

I don't think it is terrible to leave your dog outside but I would not go.
I would just let her know you appreciate the invitation but you will have
to decline. The ADA does not cover private homes and I understand people
don't want dogs in their homes for any number of reasons. Good luck.

Talk to her about your leaving the dog on her leash. She may shed some, but
she won't do anything she shouldn't, or that your sister-in-law believes she
would do. My daughter is beginning to be like that, too, and if I get
another dog, I will have to explain to her that I am using the dog and when
I come to visit her the dog will come with me. However, I will leave it on
leash the entire time if this will help.
I wouldn't want to go either under the circumstances.
Cindy

I wouldn't go,
Your dog comes first.
You don't know what the weather will be like.
Can you fix something at home to feel special?
Having a small dinner something like that?
