Thanks Julie.
I too have found that moving my dog away slightly usually does the trick,
but I'll keep the clear instructions in mind.

I figure that I am never going to be able to stop every person who wants to
pet my dog, so it's more useful to work on keeping my dog from going gaga
over it.  I'm pretty sure people sometimes give him a pat when we get up to
get out of the bus, but, so long as Krokus just keeps on with his business,
I don't much care.

I might say, "step back" or "move away"  but more likely, I'd take a step
back and call my dog back to me.  It's my new go to technique for
practically everything.  It would move me and the dog away and send a very
clear silent message that interaction is not appreciated.  Also my son and
husband tell me I give people this look that says, "you are stupid."  I
don't mean to, but I guess that's how people interpret it.

I've found that if people ask, they will listen if you say no.  The clear
and to the point instructions are saved for the pet-a-files.

Hi Julie.
That's interesting.  So, if some shmuck reaches to pat the dog while you're
getting ready to cross the street, you say "Hands off the dog."?  I'm trying
to work out how to give such an instruction without saying "don't".  Would
"Stop distracting the dog" work? But that seems to non-specific for an
idiot.

It reminds me of that book I was reading a while ago about training air line
personnel for emergency situations.  They are trained to give passengers
extremely brief, to the point instructions without the word no in them.  So
things like: "turn right", "head down, brace" Or "sit down".  There is no
please or don't do that, just exactly what needs to happen and nothing else.

It's how I've moved to interacting with most of the public.  It's not mean,
but neither is it inviting.  It's just matter of fact, this is what is going
to happen.  It works, incredibly well.

That's all for when I'm shopping or getting somewhere or otherwise engaged
in living my life.  When I actually want to engage in conversation with
people a different approach is needed.  Then I look at people, smile more,
nod a bit and join in the conversation.  If the dog comes up, generally I
talk a minute or two on that and then smoothly transition to something else.

It works about 90% of the time and the other 10% I write about here so you
guys can all laugh along, or shake your heads or groan. *smile*  I haven't
had any craziness for months, I'm probably due for some nonsense!

I find that the harness signs  give people something interesting to read
while petting my dog--lolol

Anyway, never found they worked for mebut I'm not trying to say that someone
else shouldn't use them, just my experience.

Interesting peace there about perception and the slight movement.

Well, personally, I don't feel that signs really work. And I like the
psychological explanation.

Usually Ijust tell my dog that we are going to continue and I tell the
person that my dog is off-limits when in harness. There are people who just
will never learn it and I have had to learn to not get excited over this but
just to get my dog's attention back as fast as I can.

I might try the leash movement though I wouldn't want to do it when waiting
at a traffic light because I don't want to loose direction by
unintentionally changing my position.

as for echo location and expanding perception I do feel that there is
potential there. However, i haven't really found a lot of people who
approach this topic with an open mind but stay grounded.
