I am not sure the dog originally being discussed was going to be a guide
dog, but the discussion could lead to discouragement. Check out companies
where some of the products are manufactured. Sometimes they offer discounts
to people with service animals. Also, if a person watches for sales it would
be possible to get the food or whatever cheaper. Probably not so much the
medicines.

Thanks for pointing out the fact that not all blind people can afford the
high end dog foods. However we do want our dogs to be as healthy as
possible. Sometimes on this list it feels like people are saying if we do
not feed these high quality foods we are not taking good care of our dogs.
It feels like some of you are saying that having a guide dog is only for
those who are lucky enough to have lots of money. Well, that is not the
case for many of us. We all know the unemployment and low wages for the
blind. I am a retired senior with additional disabilities in addition to
blindness. After rent and utilities there isn't much left so I have to do
my best to find affordable products for myself, my home and my guide dog. I
suggest to anyone getting a new dog that they discuss their dog's diet with
the school and the vet once you have your dog home. I did this and the
school and my vet said that Purina products are of good quality and suitable
for a working dog. I always discuss the dog food choices with my vet at
every visit just in case we want to make a change. It is possible to feed a
guide dog on a very low budget. Of course the other concern for those of us
with limited income is the high cost of heartworm, flea prevention,
vaccinations and vet care. It is too bad there is not any financial
assistance to help low income guide dog handlers with these expenses.
Please do not discourage anyone from applying for a guide dog just because
they are living on a very limited income

Peter, sometimes people simply can't do what you are suggesting, so we are
looking for inexpensive dogfoods here that people can afford. Dogs can
thrive on these foods; some will become ill anyway, so I think we need to
continue helping the person find the inexpensive dogfoods that she needs in
order to have a dog right now. Maybe one day she can afford more.

After losing a cat to diabetes years ago and tracing it to carb content in
food, we learned about commercial food. - Now we bite the bullet and spend
the money on super high end dog food. Organic, clean and multi source
protein. A lot of money. Raw chicken, raw other meats, and a bowl out of
Origen or Acana. A big bag is w-a-y more than commercial brands. But we
believe from our research In the long run, we may spend the same amount of
money on food for life, as we might on horrific vet bills for a prematurely
ill or dying dog. Think about it. We really think it is worth it. Perhaps
consider at least cutting commercial food with healthier stuff if it is all
you can afford. Check out Dr. Becker's online vet commentaries. Hey she
has too much to day like Dr. Mercola does for humans; both can be a little
alarmist sometimes. But they generally have excellent information with
longevity as the main interest.
