I want to say something about evacuation. If you are able to evacuate you must have one or more of the following:
1. Money
2. Transportation
3. Help from folks— family/friends/whomever.
4. The ability to leave your home.
It may seem obvious to people who have never dealt with this situation but evacuation is not easy for many. People are poor or they have no help or they cannot leave because they are too ill or their disability or that of a loved one prevents them from doing so. There are all kinds of reasons why people can't leave, and yes, people don't leave because living where we do we kind of get used to this kind of weather. And we think oh it won't be too bad we'll be fine. I know because I am a Katrina survivor. It is supremely unhelpful to make comments like "I'd have left before this started. "
You have no idea of anyone else's situation or what is driving their choice to stay if indeed they had a choice.
And just so this is not totally off topic, there is my quick and dirty emergency list for sheltering in place with dogs.
1. Canned or shelf-stable dog food of one kind or another.
2. A gallon of water a day per dog.
3. First ait kit
4. Emergency sling— back pack life vest some way to lift a dog if that becomes necessary.
5. Towels
6. Boots because even if you don't take water there will be sharp debris on the ground.
If you leave your home after an event like this be very aware of downed power lines and try to find someone who has scoped out the area and ask them the lay of the land.
