Hey Joe,
I find ways to let the dogs work within limits. Laveau worked for years small routes in the neighborhood that let her work but were within the range of what she can handle. With Mill'E it's tough because she's very old and fraggile. So when I know she's feeling ancey, I put the harness on her and let her guide me to my friend's car and we hit the Mc Donalds drivethrough, and take a picnic to the park where she can chill and rest and eat fries because she's old. Then we go home and she's happy even though she really didn't go anywhere.
I'm deafblind with other physical disabilities so usually try to have a working dog and a semi-retired backup. Because it's not really an option for me to just use a cane. So my dogs get used to me leaving with someone else.
