[NAGDU] time to think about which guide dog school to apply to

Hi! I'll be interested in what you decide and how your experiences are. I hope you'll share with the list. Anyway, I got my first guy dog from guy dogs for the blind. I have to say, my experience in class was rather discouraging. Two students were sent home, and one of them was my roommate. In her case, they said that her travel skills were not good enough. I can't respond to that. But is her roommate, it was incredibly sad and discouraging to watch how sad she was and how heartbroken she was over losing her dog and being sent home. They did a dog switch with another student, and threatened to send another student home. And actually got so bad that they made an announcement that barring any on for seen disasters everyone would be graduating with their dog in a week. I wanted to do a dog change with me. Looking back, I will concede that they were probably right. My first guy dog was wild. But I loved her so much! Fortunately for me, I was able to keep her and I've always been glad that that happened. I went to the Seeing Eye for dog number two. My experience there was really fantastic. My current guy dog is a much better guide. That isn't any critique of any of the schools training the dogs. I'm sure they all produce great dogs and I'll produce dogs that are a bit wild. I just insisted on keeping the wild dog my first time. The reason I went to the Seeing Eye was I feel very passionately that I want to own the dog from the minute I leave. I also do not want mandatory follow up. If I receive a follow-up training, I want it to be because I wanted not because I have to get it. If you feel this way, then perhaps in longer plane ride then you would like would be worth it. I live in Utah and seeing eyes located in New Jersey. It was a bit of a long plane ride. However, it was more than worth it! I think it really comes down to what you want from A dog guide school. My guess is that they all produce fantastic dogs and they all have a few dogs that are lemons. After all, dogs aren't inanimate objects. Good luck to you!

I was told that if I didn't like it I could just choose not to give her any medications to slow down the cancer at all. My second dog also had health issues and when I chose to feed her a raw diet I was reminded that they owned her and I went through quite a lot in order to prove to them that it was safe . When I Retired her it was a hard process because they wanted her back to reissue her— she was 5. And there were many reasons it would not have been appropriate or safe for the dog. The program in question had the year before started offering an unconditional ownership and I firmly believe that piece of paper is what kept her with me until she died at age 16 When someone owns something, their decision is the beginning and end, they get the final say. I personally have had my trust so broken that I will never let an organization have that kind of power over me and my working dog, no matter how "good" or "well intended" they may be.
> Also, disagreements happen, things happen. At the beginning, everyone seems to have a great relationship with the programs. But if you ever have a disagreement, because they do happen, what are your options then?
