*Canine Influenza in Florida
The department of Agriculture recently learned from the University of
Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine that multiple cases of
respiratory disease have been treated at their hospital in the past
week. At least seven cases have been confirmed as H3N2, canine influenza
virus. All of the treated dogs are in stable condition, but several have
been hospitalized.

There is no evidence that H3N2 canine influenza virus infects people.

While this virus has been circulating throughout the country, this is
the first time there have been confirmed cases in Florida.

The Universiy of Florida has an information sheet for pet owners that
can be found here:

https://vetmed-hospitals.sites.medinfo.ufl.edu/files/2017/05/Info-for-Pet-Owners-on-Canine-Influenza-1.pdf

Additional information can be found on the AVMA (American Veterinary
Medical Association) website:

https://www.avma.org/KB/Resources/Reference/Pages/Canine-Influenza-Backgrounder.aspx

We carry the bivalent influenza vaccine that protects against the 2 most
common strains, H3N2 and H3N8. If your pet is displaying any upper
respiratory symptoms please call us to schedule an appointment at
(727)796-2552.

Regards,

The Staff at Animal and Bird Hospital of Clearwater
