[NAGDU] More warning

Thanks Julie. At least I know I'm not alone. I started teaching him to
ring the bell, but it was still at the last minute. It would put him in the
foyer, on the tile, for a few seconds, though he tends to rush around and
distribute the dribbles. I can give the bells another shot, but it won't
solve the problem of getting more warning, as you yourself point out.

Bianca, I can't think of any behavior he does that can be rewarded. By the
time he lets me know he has to go, it's too late to do much but try to grab
my shoes and run him out. What food did you switch from, and to? Krokus is
allergic to chicken, and it's harder than I imagined to find food with no
chicken at all in it.

Monty is somewhat this way. He drinks a fair bit more than most dogs I've
had. He also goes through stretches where I need to restrict his water or
he will drink dangerous amounts. Like you, we've been to the vet a number
of times and they never find anything.

He doesn't have indoor accidents though or at least not yet. He's 10 now
though.

I have bells on the door which he can bump when he'd like to go out. He's
pretty good about only ringing them when he actually has to do something.
Belle though, she'd ring them when she wanted to sunbathe, check out what
the neighbors were doing or just for the joy of going outside.

How much advance warning he gives is still up to him though. I don't know
how you could go about increasing that time. I like the bells though,
because they have me trained. I can be immersed in another activity and the
bells always get my attention. I don't have to worry about missing
something the dog is trying to communicate. I work from home and spend a
lot of time in highly concentrated work where I don't always pay attention
to the subtle things going on elsewhere in the house.

Good luck!
Julie

Since I got him, more than 2 years now, Krokus has had a pattern of drinking
a lot, then needing urgently to pee. We try to control his water intake,
while still giving him free access to water. The whole thing ramps up and
down, and right now, it's up. He's been to the vet a few times and had
tests, which didn't find anything more than a small sediment in his bladder,
which might indicate a bladder infection at some point, though they didn't
find anything at the time of the test. I've just ordered him some cranberry
pills, to see if they make a difference.

Anyway, we try to monitor when he drinks, and get him out within an hour or
2. We take him out every 2-3 hours, regardless. But, when he has to go
before I expect it, he rushes into the living room, and, if I'm not ready,
he starts to dribble on the floor. I need a minute or 2 to grab my shoes,
and my jacket when it's cold, so we get little puddles that have to be
cleaned up.

Is there a way I can get him to give me a little notice, and not wait until
the last possible second before he lets me know he has to go out? His
housebreaking leaves something to be desired.

Tracy
